2005年の中、「d20　System」系の中では、最初は弱くても最後に最も英雄に成長するダンジョンズ＆ドラゴンズ3.5版の基本中の基本ルールブック。20レベルまで記載されているが、昔の版のようにお城や塔を建てて領地経営するルールや神さまになるルールは記載されてなく、例外的に6レベルで特技を取って従者などを従えるため、その気になれば永続的にほぼフリーの冒険者が出来る風にはなっている。
一部を除いてd20+修正値を難易度以上で判定が決まるため、理解すると親しみやすい。
呪文数はD&Dの伝統なのか3分の1か半分ぐらい占めている気がする。
