モンスターのほとんどにカートゥーン風味のイラストが添付されています。
子供受けは良くありませんでした。
D&Dのモンスターは星の数ほどいるんでしょうが、この本には代表格が数多く収録されています。
PHBとMMとDMG、この三冊でコアルールと呼びますが、MMは正にD&Dのコア＝核を成す重要な一冊だと思います。

基本的なモンスターは網羅しているよ、という建前でありながら、他のゲームシステム同様、ついついこれだけでは物足りなくなるのがモンスターマニュアル(通称MM1)。

とはいえ、ほぼすべてのモンスターにイラストが入り(しかもコテコテなアメリカンテイスト)、これだけでも充分に遊べる内容ではあります。プレイヤをするだけなら、当然この本は不要です。
